¥$ BASEL 23: Vultures Rave

2023 came and left in a flash with overwhelming new amount of anticipation for the future. With talks of AI, war/ genocide in the Middle East and Afro beats still going strong, 2023 felt like an erratic and chaotic year.

We decided to end the year in Miami, a perfect location to vibe out, catch some sun rays and welcome the winter solstice. ART BASEL takes place in Miami’s Wynwood neighborhood early December where artists, taste makers and fans of the culture come from all over the world to commune, network and celebrate selfexpression and art.

While down there, we had the privilege to meet many different walks of life and documented most of it. As most of you know, Kanye West decided to do a surprise concert in the mist of all the festivities. It felt uncanny to be honest. There was a sort of calm before the madness. Dinning at a low key Jamaican restaurant, is the humble Kanye West, vibing and previewing unheard music with all that were in attendance.

We weren’t present, although, we did dine at that restaurant several days before Ye popped up but it felt cool to know that Ye is out being himself and vibing with the people.

Kanye went on to throw what was advertised as a rave. It was underground and definitely cult-like with an exclusive and creative website where you can purchase the tickets. The show only had about 200-300 people in attendance but the city went kind of crazy behind the Ye madness as the website crashed because of too much traffic. Tickets were being sold via Instagram on a fan account. Felt a little sketchy. But the show did indeed happen!

Kanye brought out a star-studded line-up to accompany him and preview new music from his upcoming collaboration album with TY DOLLA $IGN. The line-up included LIL DURK,  OFFSET, CHRIS BROWN, KODAK BLACK, FREDDIE GIBBS, TY DOLLA $IGN and the biggest star yet Yeezy’s daughter NORTH WEST. The whole line-up came on stage in the fresh code; all black everything.

It’s always dope to get new music from Kanye but with Miami’s ART BASEL as a backdrop for new YEEZY is just perfect.

The show bared some controversy as some of the performers in attendance have been wrapped up in some not so favorable affairs. It was reported that KODAK had been arrested for cocaine possession the day prior to his appearance with Ye.
CHRIS BROWN, who has had his fair share of controversial moments in his career. OFFSET who is still kind of feuding with ex MIGO mate QUAVO and morning the death of TAKEOFF all while promoting a sophomore solo album, SET IT OFF. FREDDIE GIBBS, known for his underground notoriety and for falling out with the snowman, JEEZY. LIL DURK, who had a great year as the self-proclaimed voice of the trenches.

TY and NORTH arn’t too controversial but can’t deny they both add a certine flair to the show. Miss West was more than just part of the entourage, -she was there to make her musical debut!

The most controversial of them all, however is no other than KANYE WEST, himself, who has been accused of using antisemitic rhetoric and is visibly still experiencing mental health issues. This is a sensitive statement to make because most people will take it as dismissive which it isn’t at all. Ye is def on to something as he constantly seems to find the pulse of the culture and tap into it to chime in his creativity.
What is most curious though was Kanye’s complete outfit. He was out on stage, yes in all black, but also what appeared to be what looked like a Klu Klutz Klan hood, an oversized cropped T, a baggie pair of comfy sweatpants and some sock shoes, which we now know are his new Yeezy Sock Pod products, worn up to just beneath his knees like the knickerboxers . As odd as it was, the look was stunning and seemed to resonate on a certain level. It was reminiscent of them old Champ hoodies, -you know the ones with the cone head?

Miami ART BASEL was a great way to end 2023 and the fact that Kanye West thought so too is just great. For those who are excited as we are for VULTURES to drop, there’s some exclusive Kanye music that is out for everyone to enjoy. You can find a number of new songs and even a full length album from the contemporary maestro under the artist name of ‘BR1X3R’ and ‘Tobes’ on APPLE MUSIC.

Check it out, you’ll be glad we hipped you! 😎

SabotageMe: Shaylia Thomas Quest to Defy Odds and Embraces Expression

In the world of fashion and empowerment, Shaylia Thomas, a creative force and cancer survivor, stands out as the founder of SabotageMe. Facing a life crisis led Shaylia to discover her passion for fashion and self-expression, ultimately inspiring her to create a brand that embodies courage, strength, and individuality.

Shaylia’s journey took a pivotal turn when diagnosed with stage three cancer in 2014 during her final year of college. Despite the urgency of her situation, she successfully underwent chemotherapy and graduated in 2015. Unfortunately, a relapse in October of the same year led her to a stem cell transplant and intensive treatment. This challenging period became a catalyst for self-discovery, prompting Shaylia to explore her love for fashion and makeup, transitioning from a self-described tomboy to a fashion entrepreneur.

In 2018, Shaylia officially launched SabotageMe, a brand initially focused on lingerie. The name, she explains, is an oxymoron representing chaos, rebellion, fierceness, and empowerment. It reflects overcoming self-sabotage and embracing one’s strength in the face of adversity. Shaylia’s commitment to body positivity led the brand to pivot to body suits, aiming to desexualize and accentuate the beauty of diverse body types.

Shaylia’s foray into the fashion world began with sharing her style and opinions on YouTube in 2018. Positive responses and messages inspired her to delve into entrepreneurship, creating tutorials and advertisements for various brands. Recognizing her potential, she redirected her focus to her personal brand, culminating in the establishment of SabotageMe.

A graduate of Cazenovia College in upstate New York, Shaylia faced challenges in a predominantly women-focused and less diverse environment. Despite her struggles, she excelled in academics and sports, playing volleyball at the collegiate level. Diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma during this time, Shaylia’s determination to complete her education remained unwavering, shaping her career path in human services.

Shaylia, now a cancer survivor and successful entrepreneur, aims to shift her focus to the backend of her brand. She aspires to enhance media exposure for her brand, embellish her website, and build a collaborative team. Embracing the collaborative spirit, Shaylia seeks to work with new creatives in the days of social media where genuine collaborations are a rarity.

Art remains a core aspect of Shaylia’s journey. Recently showcased in a Chinatown art gallery, her brand fuses fine arts with fashion. Through art exhibitions and live events, Shaylia creates spaces that encourage self-expression, attracting bold and outgoing individuals who resonate with her philosophy.

Shaylia Thomas, the resilient creative, has transformed her adversity into a platform for empowerment and self-expression through SabotageMe. As she takes a step back to focus on the strategic growth of her brand, Shaylia’s journey continues to inspire and empower individuals to embrace their uniqueness in the world of fashion and beyond.

Jenso ‘JP’ Plymouth, a Haitian American producer/ engineer hailing from Brockton, Massachusetts, has left an notable mark on the music industry. With numerous industry-level placements alongside well-known artists, including Chris Brown’s 11:11 project that dropped 11/10, JP’s journey from his humble beginnings in Brockton to his current residence in California is a testament to his unwavering dedication to music.

Chris Brown - Sensational

The Brockton native’s introduction to music came through learning to play the guitar and piano. His early experiences with these instruments ignited his creative spark, as he began composing his own music at the tender age of six or seven. Even at such a young age, he demonstrated a natural inclination for music, experimenting with songwriting and playing the guitar, laying the foundation for his future career.

JP’s journey into the music industry took a significant step forward when he began working with local artists in Massachusetts. Among the artists he collaborated with Alan, a talent from Milton, and Bobby Brown Jr, son of the famous Bobby Brown, stood out. These collaborations marked the beginning of his professional career, with JP sending beats and recording songs for these artists. It was with artists like these that he developed his skills, nurtured his creative talents, and cultivated the relationships that would prove essential in his journey.

In his pursuit of a career in music, JP decided to move to New York, enrolling at St. John’s University to get closer to the heart of the music industry. His time at St. John’s provided the necessary proximity to the industry that would shape his future. His educational background in business also provided a solid foundation for his future endeavors in the music world.

St. John’s University played a pivotal role, serving as a springboard for JP’s career. It was being in New York where he got his opportunity to intern at Crosby Collective Recording Studios. JP worked his way up at the studio and eventually moved to California on the studio’s behalf and landed his first big break .

His first big placement was on Young Thug’s “So Much Fun” and “Slime Language 2”. These accomplishments catapulted his career to new heights, cementing his position as a sought-after producer in the industry.

During JP’s time at Crosby Collective Recording Studios, he assumed various responsibilities, including hospitality, maintenance, customer service, and inventory management. At this studio JP had the opportunity to study the main engineer, gaining valuable insights into the intricacies of the trade.

JP worked his way up from intern to studio manager at Crosby’s New York location. His dedication and passion for music led to an enduring relationship with the studios, where he continues to collaborate with them at their California branch, crediting the studio for securing many of his placements as part of the team. Those placements include works from Rich The Kid, DaniLeigh, Ciara, Chris Brown and more.

JP’s journey is a testament to the advice he now offers to aspiring musicians: study music, seek mentors, learn from experienced professionals, and find your place within the music community. His dedication and persistence have allowed him to thrive in a competitive industry.

The seasoned producer mentioned that his favorite part of making music is witnessing the creative process from start to finish. He finds inspiration in those moments when the music flows effortlessly, with little effort, turning the studio into a realm of artistic brilliance.

Looking back on his journey, JP would advise his younger self to focus on honing his musical craft and building a personal brand early on, emphasizing the importance of personal and artistic growth.

While California is now his home, JP returns to Massachusetts occasionally to visit family and celebrate the holidays. He takes pride in the fact that his home state is increasingly making an impact on the music industry. He salutes fellow artists like Lord Felix and the Van Buren team from Brockton, as well as Bia, who have all been making waves on the music scene. Jenso ‘JP’ Plymouth’s remarkable journey from Brockton to California stands as a testament to the power of passion, dedication, and relentless pursuit of one’s dreams in the music industry.

David Jean: A Journey Through Fashion and Film

In our conversation with HFW founder David, we learned that his 15-year journey in the fashion industry has been nothing short of remarkable. His unique path began in Miami, where he transitioned from acting to modeling. David’s experiences included working on the set of movies like “Ali” alongside Will Smith and music videos like Sisqo’s “Thong Song.”

“I’m a New York hustler,” David proudly stated. His tenacious spirit and constant pursuit of opportunities eventually led him to the world of fashion. As a mentee to celebrity publicist Christian Ruart, David worked with industry giants such as Baby Phat, FUBU, and Sean John, immersing himself in the fashion scene of the early 2000s.

David’s traditional approach to fashion production sets HFW apart from the crowd. In a world where the industry is increasingly influenced by social media and popularity, David remains committed to focusing on the art of fashion. He believes that shows should emphasize the designs and not be overshadowed by performances or other distractions.

David attributes HFW’s success to his dedicated team of ten individuals, all equally integral to the organization’s achievements. His ambition extends to working with established designers and discovering new talents. He takes the burden of HFW’s continued success on leadership, strategy, and execution.

With the second consecutive successful year behind them, HFW is already gearing up for future events, including workshops and community engagement activities in 2024.

Rae White: A Motherly Figure to Models

In her role as the Production Manager of HFW, Rae plays a pivotal and often unsung role in ensuring the seamless execution of the fashion event. Her responsibilities go far beyond the spotlight, as she’s the point of contact that holds the operation together.

She understands the intricate details of event logistics, from coordinating schedules and managing resources to handling unexpected hiccups with grace and poise. Her ability to maintain a clear and structured plan keeps the show running smoothly.

What sets Rae apart is her unique combination of experiences. Having started her career as a model at a young age of 13 with the prestigious agency John Casablanca, she gained invaluable insights into the fashion industry from the inside out. Rae later joined a local group known as Privé, where she modeled at their quarterly fashion show events. This hands-on experience as a model gives her a keen understanding of what both the models and designers need to excel, and she uses this insight to foster a collaborative and supportive atmosphere among the team. After modeling in several shows with Privé, Rae went on to do production management for them.

Rae’s journey from a young model to a seasoned Production Manager serves as a testament to her dedication and passion for the fashion world. She not only knows the ins and outs of the runway but also the importance of teamwork and meticulous planning that are essential for a successful fashion event. Her ability to adapt, communicate effectively, and handle high-pressure situations makes her a driving force behind HFW’s continued success.

What sets HFW apart is its focus on connecting designers and models beyond New England. Rae shared stories of designers like JUS-10 from New York, who created a jacket paying homage to Boston, featuring iconic landmarks like the Citgo sign and the legendary bar, Slades. Rae, originally from Trinidad, aspires to work with designers from her homeland to complement her native culture.

On Friday October 13, HFW hosted a fashion show at Chroma Studios in Peabody. The dazzling studio included unique photo booths, like a flower paradise room, for people to take shots after the show. Designers Alessia Aucoin, Rachel Walters, Vo Stewartbaxter and Dana El Ghoul featured stunning pieces for everyone to view and enjoy. Dana El Ghoul flew in from Florida to showcase her beautiful pieces which is a testament to HFW vast networks.

Owner of Chroma Studio, Jessica, dedicated the studio space to encourage young models, including her daughter, to participate. One standout moment of HFW Friday event was the partnership with the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Keren Zuzi, a patient with sickle cell anemia celebrated her 14th birthday at the event, living her dream of experiencing a high-profile fashion show.

Rae’s dedication to her models extends beyond the runway; she considers them her “babies” and offers guidance and support throughout their careers.

As she looks ahead to 2024, Rae envisions becoming a manager for models, further nurturing and guiding the next generation of fashion talent.

Saturday, October 14th marked the date of HFW main show which did not disappoint. The extravagant event hosted at MassArt included designs from Zonya Cambell, Vava Zadi, Janaby, JUS-10, Urban Pigeons, James Mason and Xuan Cui.

HFW Fall 2023 was not just about the clothes on display; it was about the sense of tradition, community, and mentorship that runs through the veins of this event. Woptober: A Night of Boston Talent and Trap Legends: Road Runner Boston 10/6

On the evening of Friday, October 6th, Road Runner Boston became the epicenter of Boston’s vibrant music scene, thanks to the skillful hands of DJ Ricky Felixx, who kicked off the night with an electrifying opening set.
The stage was set, the crowd was buzzing with anticipation, and a lineup of talented artists was ready to deliver an unforgettable performance. Vasjan, a rising star in the Boston music scene, was the first to take center stage, and from there, the night only soared to greater heights.

What followed was a mesmerizing showcase of Boston’s finest artists, each bringing their unique flavor to the stage and leaving the audience craving for more. Vasjan, not one to disappoint, brought out some of his talented friends, including Lord Ju, Big Sosa, and Yaya Gabbana, creating an electric atmosphere that set the tone for the night.

The Gorgeous Gangster, Lord Ju, not content with just being a guest, later rocked her own set, showcasing her individual prowess and captivating the crowd. Per usual she killed her set and had everyone paying attention. Ju has been making her own noise as she just signed to Jim Jones’ Vamp Life Records. We are excited to see what she is cooking up and has in store for the fans.

Rebel Mafia’s Brandon James Big Super, Kye Bills, and Messy Money Sav followed, reaffirming the tight-knit bond and immense talent within the Rebel Mafia family. This squad of four consist of 3 siblings and a fourth wheel being Kye Bills. Their hardcore lyrics, beat selection and stage presences left the audience wondering about where they can find more of their music. We have featured interviews with Big Super and Kye Bills in the past. Hopefully in the future we’ll have the chance to link up with Messy Money Sav and Brandon James, the two other members.

Each opening act added their own flair to the evening. Rising Mission Hill artist King Brickz took the stage alongside 8Zipp and a live band. His set was impressive as he went through a host of songs with the Frank Beats band supporting his vocals in the background. It was dope to see 8Zipp in action as it was our first time seeing him perform. Zipp is a star in the city that has been making some noise for sometime now. He’s an artist we definitely like to interview.

Besides 8Zipp, Bricks brought out a couple artist to perform on his set. Those artist include Grimey Gurt, GBGFLEE and Annunciation Blue. King Brickz’s regal performance left a lasting impression, not to mention he brought his whole court (aka his hood) with him. The set was impressive and entertaining to watch, we are looking forward to see the direction King Brickz goes with his career.

Brickz set was championed by JAMN 94.5’s DJ E Dubble, who made his unwavering support for Brickz known.

DJ Foreign, another talented DJ from JAMN 94.5, kept the energy high and the ladies hyped with his electrifying set. He even treated the audience to a twerk contest, ensuring that the party atmosphere was in full swing.

The headline acts didn’t disappoint either. Luh Tyler, a young and swaggy trap artist, effortlessly delivered his nonchalant yet captivating songs, leaving the crowd in awe. He moved across the stage grace and poise as he delivered his unorthodox flows and hard knocking beats. The crowd stared backed at him performing with a reaction that was hard to put a finger on. It was a mix of bewilderment and amazement, lol. Not exactly sure but it definitely was a pleasure to see Luh Tyler in person and get an idea of where his sound is coming from.

The Super Smash Bros, known for their afrobeats vibe, switched gears to cater to the trap scene of the night and kept the audience engaged while the anticipation for the main event built. Their set kept the party going with great tracks and high energy engagements with the crowd. The Brothers kept the crowd entertained and hyped as they were a great precursor to the main event.

And then, the moment everyone had been waiting for arrived – Atlanta’s trap legend, Gucci Mane, took the stage. Mr. Woptober himself delivered a performance for the ages, blending classic tracks that long-time fans adore with his latest and biggest hits, including the crowd-favorite ‘Both’ featuring Drake.

It seemed like clock work 1017 general. Gucci’s performance was high packed and well polished. He performed with much ease and seemed to be in his mode the whole night.

Gucci Mane’s presence was electrifying, and he left no doubt that he still reigns supreme in the world of trap music.

Kudos to Cedar Tree Entertainment for orchestrating such a fantastic show, and a big shoutout to everyone who came out to vibe and support the artists. Special thanks to the talented photographer Corey (@madeby.rts on IG) for capturing the night’s memorable moments through his lens.

The show at Road Runner Boston on October 6th was a testament to the thriving music scene in Boston, featuring a mix of local underground stars, a promising young talent in Luh Tyler, and the trap legend himself, Gucci Mane. It was a night that showcased the diversity and dynamism of the music community in Boston, leaving everyone in attendance with lasting memories and a desire for more.
